GCL’s First Comprehensive Landfill Gas Project Gets Grid-Connected

The Baoying GCL Yundong Landfill Gas Power Generation Project has recently been grid-connected. This is GCL’s first comprehensive landfill gas project, serving to promote the development of the currently undersized biogas industry.
The Baoying GCL Yundong Landfill Gas Power Generation Project was carried out in Dashu Village, Wangzhigang, Baoying County, Yangzhou City of Suzhou. It has a generating capacity of 1 trillion watts and was built in two phases. The first phase included the building/installation of a 600-kW internal combustion engine, a biogas pretreatment system, a waste-heat recovery system, and grid-power transformation equipment. The year after completion, it generated 4 million kWh of power (3.5 million of which were provided as power supply) and about 70,000 tons of hot water.

With the acceleration of infrastructural development for urban-rural environmental sanitation integration, the amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) collected in Baoying County has been significantly increased from 350 tons/day to 500 tons/day. The “harmless MSW treatment” facility invested into by Baoying County has allowed for the burial of 530,000 tons of everyday waste, with 60% of which comes from urban areas. Biogas is an important direction in power generation for the future. Basically, organic matter within MSW undergoes anaerobic decomposition and produces landfill gas as a result; after two to three years of fermentation, it may be used to generate electricity at a biogas power plant.

The Baoying GCL Yundong Landfill Gas Power Generation Project produces thermal energy and electric power from waste material, allowing resources to be recycled and reused. Such operations will greatly reduce pollution in the surrounding environment and greenhouse gas emission, benefitting both the economy and the natural ecology.
